When designing a pond there are many site specifics that need to be taken into account. Once your client
has decided on a style of pond, for example formal or informal, they must also decide whether it will be above
ground (raised) or below ground. What lining materials will be used? Will you specify the use of butyl liner,
fibreglass or something else? Will the filters be bottom drain fed; mid feed or pump fed? The answers to these
questions depend very much on whether your client's desire is a natural pond (plants), a fish pond or a koi pond.
The cost implications of your pond design can be immeasurable if initial mistakes are made. It is true to say,
any body of water can be filtered adequately. However, if the design is extremely technical, dead areas can appear
where water is not circulated and filtered correctly. You may find more than one filter system is needed and hiding
these can be a chore. No client wishes for visible pipe work and filters, so the design must be based on the
specifics of the job.
The Plan
If the plan of attack is clear and concise, the product selection and eventual finish should be good. If the
pond seems to develop over time and new ideas are incorporated by your client during the construction phase, one
can be left with an expensive mistake. The pond world has had many technical advances in recent years to make the
life of you, the specialist designer, far simpler. Please feel free to make use of our vast experience during the
planning phase. Correct planning and product selection is not something to be overlooked.
